![]() Software as a Service from InsightThe history of software procurement and provision of it has been pretty much the same for a number of years. There have been attempts to change the management of software a number of times; however without full support from the software vendors this has never been achieved. With IT becoming much more adaptable, user friendly and the huge decrease in communication costs it is surely the RIGHT time to provide a remotely managed rental offering. For years we have been purchasing “Shrink Wrapped” software products that we spend ages installing and even more time managing the patches and subsequent development of. As we all know, this includes yearly upgrades which inevitably mean we have to replace the hardware infrastructure to cope with the said upgrades. The costs that we have to incur in the replacement or upgrading of the hardware infrastructure, let alone the associated costs in managing this, more than outweigh the costs associated with a SaaS solution. According to Gartner, SaaS is the next new transformation of service provision growing from 5% of business software in 2005 to 25% by 2011. Gartner believes this will occur as more and more businesses don’t want to have the responsibility for buying, installing, customising and then supporting the products they buy, when they could choose a managed services company to provide the platform and associated software and charge the business a monthly fee. The advantages to SaaS are:
The continuing demands of more and more complex software means that organisations are often forced to upgrade desktop and laptop computers for more powerful machines, often before the upgrade has been planned. In much the same way, demands for storage are increasing on a constant basis either because of data retention requirements or through day to daybusiness activity. Capacity planning and storage management is a time consuming and never ending process resulting in regular expenditure on higher capacity storage devices. Insight Software Live delivers Microsoft software as a service, comprising Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office, and a “menu” of other Microsoft applications which can be added to the user’s desktop depending on each individual’s requirement. As well as the applications themselves, Insight Software Live includes a 5 Gigabyte storage allowance per user as standard, as well as organisational level storage to enable online collaboration, a full backup service and a stringent Service Level Agreement ensuring maximum service availability. Insight Software Live is charged on a simple monthly subscription per user. The number of user accounts can be flexed up or down at any time, in line with the number of staff in the organisation. Because the users’ desktop is accessed via the Internet, data and applications are available to everyone, no matter where they’re located. IT Staff can concentrate on other, more productive tasks whilst the user always gets the most up-to-date version of Microsoft applications, infrastructure costs are reduced, and there’s no need for expensive servers, storage devices, on site support, private networks or backup facilities. The base desk top package comprises:
On top of the base desk top package, each desktop can be enhanced with the following options: »» Microsoft Office Professional
