It's getting harder by the day to imagine a cloudless world. The introduction of cloud technology has proven to be a disruptive event, setting a chain reaction in motion that is unstoppable. And it offers plenty of new business opportunities for MSPs.
One of the main advantages of the cloud is the ability to scale resources and optimize performance. Just imagine you get a new customer with 20,000 users. It is an excellent opportunity to take your business to the next level, but how will you make it work? If you are still hosting your own data centre, upgrading your infrastructure is an enormous investment. And what about the additional operational costs? A better strategy is to use the external IT capacity of the cloud.
Nothing beats the cloud when it comes to performance efficiency. And that doesn't only apply to technical resources but also to other aspects of MSP business. By adopting the cloud, you can make more efficient use of your personnel and gain access to all kinds of externally based knowledge.
IT professionals are scarce, so you better make sure that they use their time efficiently. The cloud enables you to do so. Well known companies like Microsoft, Citrix, and VMware have outstanding tools for monitoring and troubleshooting. You need highly talented engineers to automate the most time-consuming, repetitive tasks, and these professionals are hard to get. So once you have them, keep them happy, motivated and productive.
A transition to the cloud doesn't automatically mean you don't need technical people anymore, you only need fewer and, well… only the best.
A transition to the cloud is the perfect opportunity to downsize operations and reallocate staff. There is no way you can turn all your employees into hardcore engineers. That's fine. Just find out the hidden talents your people have and start using them. Once the repetitive tasks and processes are automated, focus on other activities to differentiate from your competitors and move your MSP business forward: developing new services, sales & marketing, and coaching your customers in their migration to the cloud.
Let's say it bluntly: as an MSP you simply can't compete with well-known high-tech companies when it comes to efficiently managing your resources. Whether it's about technical capacity, people, or knowledge, you just can’t keep up with them. Yet, if you can't beat the cloud, you can surely join it. The best way to secure the future of your business as an MSP is to use the cloud to your advantage.
