Different businesses follow different roadmaps on their journey to the cloud. You may be taking your first steps into public cloud, or you may be well into the journey with complete migration or a hybrid solution, managing multiple environments spanning the data centre, edge, and public clouds.
It is quite a challenge to have your eyes on everything and strive for operational excellence in the same way as you used to when infrastructures only existed in on-premise data centres.
A great advantage of the cloud is that you can deploy a new service very easily and very fast; in minutes – instead of the weeks in the on-prem world. Stakeholders are pleased that the company can respond so quickly to changing business demands. However, there is also a downside.
Once the service is in the cloud, the world changes. The ease and speed of the cloud make it easy to forget to configure the processes that need to accompany the new service. And then stakeholders are not so happy anymore when the security manager or compliance officer sees the lack of transparency about what goes on operationally across the workloads in the cloud.
Without good oversight the cloud can suddenly become a scary place. With financial damage, loss of reputation, damage to customers’ data and intellectual property as a result.
Where in the on-premise data centre, the service provider is responsible for the entire infrastructure, the cloud has a different model: management, security and compliance is now a shared responsibility between the cloud provider (AWS, Microsoft, Google), the service provider and even their (your) customers.
The challenge is not whether 'the cloud is secure', but whether ‘the cloud is used securely'. In other words, whether you have the right security and compliance policies, technologies and controls in place. This is a strong wake-up call, given that up to 2025, 99% of cloud security failures will be the customer’s or user’s fault as Gartner says.
Now back to operational excellence. Top-grade security starts with knowing what is going on. The world is changing towards a multi-cloud environment and that’s exactly where VMware is strong. Their vRealize suite and related cloud management products enable businesses to get a full transparent view of all assets and services across the data centre to the edge and across clouds. through one pane of glass.
Many companies are already familiar with VMware from their own data centre. That makes migration to the cloud and (hybrid) cloud management much easier. To migrate to the public cloud and use all the native toolsets there, requires news skills and different ways of managing. Since you are already familiar with VMware, you can easily add the public cloud or another environment to your current management suite, while enabling your customers to take immediate advantage of the latest technology offered by the hyperscalers.
As a VMware Aggregator Partner, Insight are pleased to offer the vRealize suite together with a raft of other products and solutions as part of the VMware Cloud Provider Programme.
