Microsoft has recently released Windows Server 2025. Designed for IT professionals and organisations, this latest server operating system provides a robust platform to support modern workloads. It seamlessly integrates with hybrid cloud environments while emphasising security and performance. Let’s look at some new features and capabilities.
As an experienced Microsoft partner, Insight recently attended and sponsored MC2MC Connect. This event brings together Microsoft experts and enthusiasts, providing a platform to connect with peers, explore new and upcoming features, and exchange ideas and best practices.
A key focus at the event was Windows Server 2025, with expert sessions covering Hyper-V and the latest features, including enhancements to Active Directory.
One highlight of the event is the return of GPU support in Hyper-V, Microsoft’s hypervisor for Windows. With the removal of RemoteFX vGPU in Windows Server 2016 and 2019, virtual machines lacked GPU support. Windows Server 2025 Datacenter addresses this gap with GPU Cluster DDA and GPU-P, meeting the growing demand for GPU-powered workloads.
This update reflects Microsoft’s response to the evolving needs of virtualisation. Unlike a decade ago, today’s workloads – especially those involving graphics-intensive applications and AI – require robust GPU support. Speaking of AI, Windows Server 2025 will enable organisations to run Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI services directly on the platform.
Microsoft has also introduced network simplification features, a direct response to community feedback. These investments align with broader industry shifts, particularly in light of VMware’s acquisition by Broadcom. By modernising Hyper-V, Microsoft aims to provide customers with a compelling alternative.
As a hybrid solution, Hyper-V’s enhancements extend to Azure, bridging the gap between on-premises environments and the cloud. With these updates, Microsoft is paving the way for a more seamless hybrid cloud experience, guiding businesses into the next phase of digital transformation.
Active Directory may be one of the few Microsoft developments where AI isn't a focal point. Nevertheless, Windows Server 2025 brings significant security and performance enhancements to this core technology.
With this latest version, new Active Directory installations are now secure by default, as stated by Microsoft. From there, organisations can customise security settings based on their specific needs and requirements.
However, the event also highlighted that these updates introduce challenges, particularly for existing configurations. To avoid disruptions, it’s crucial to plan the upgrade carefully and ensure a smooth transition.
MC2MC provided the perfect platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and challenge our own knowledge and approach – especially when exploring creative solutions for issues that Microsoft has yet to address.
Building on our existing knowledge, the event expanded our expertise in AI services and modern integrations. It also provided us with new insights to support businesses transitioning to the new version of Active Directory, ensuring a minimally disruptive migration.
